Although tattoos are really easy to get and look great, they are actually a series of ink deposits deep within the skin that are designed to last forever. With the increase of people getting tattoos, the increase of tattoo removal has also gone up considerably...
Early methods carried out came with the high risk of scarring and was very painful and also not very effective. The introduction of Q-Switched lasers has greatly improved the process, allowing physicians to eliminate most tattoos with a high degree of success alongside the very low risk of scarring.
How does the laser remove the tattoo?
The process of lasers removing the tattoo is quite simple; the lasers target tattoos with a very specific wavelength of light energy. A separate wavelength is needed for each ink colour. The popular Q-Switched lasers use PhotoAcoustic energy to penetrate the skin and target the tattoo ink. The light energy gently vibrates, shattering the tattoo ink into micro particles that the body will naturally eliminate itself.
How many treatments are needed to remove a tattoo?
Laser tattoo removals normally require several sessions. Professional tattoos normally on average take 6 to 15 treatments, whereas amateur tattoos normally need four or five treatments and are spaced approximately four to eight weeks apart. The number of treatments also depends on the size of the tattoo, the amount of ink used and the depth of the ink in the skin. Where the tattoo is placed will also determine the clearance rate.
What type of post treatment care is necessary?
An ointment and a dressing will be applied straight after your treatment and the area must be kept clean. You can take a shower the day after, however the treated area shouldn’t be scrubbed. If a scab forms, it is important that you don’t pick or scratch it.
